The Lunar New Year officially begins on Wednesday, February 4, 2025, ushering in 15 days of traditional rituals and celebrations. Across many cultures, the festivities center around honouring deities and seeking blessings for prosperity, health, and protection. Homes are thoroughly cleaned to sweep away misfortune and create space for good luck. People also pay respect to both birth families and chosen families, while ancestral tributes are offered to honour lineage. A unique aspect of the celebration is the generosity extended to even stray animals, symbolizing a deep sense of gratitude and interconnectedness with all beings.
Taken together, these traditions invite a season of renewal, reciprocity, and care across east and southeast Asia, and beyond.
Join us to prepare for and give honour to the arrival of the Fire Horse, a double Fire year, since Fire is also the Horse’s native element. Expect the year to feel highly excitable and hot blooded.
Here’s a glimpse of what we’ll explore in our 2026 Lunar New Year online event for the Chinese Year of the Fire Horse (note other east Asian traditions also follow the lunar calendar, but I will be exploring this within the context of Chinese astrology):
Spark and Scope: Igniting Creative Charge
We open with art mediumship and automatic writing to name the year’s core desire and define scope. We’ll discuss the need to cultivate momentum with guardrails to avoid burnout or simply travelling quickly in the wrong direction. Techniques focus on stabilizing inspiration, transforming bursts of enthusiasm into sustained creation, while honouring the Horse’s instinct for freedom and passion.
Cadence and Capacity: Building Momentum Without Burnout
Horses move in gaits, and Fire moves in phases. In Daoist cosmology, Fire is clarity, illumination, and transformation. But without rhythm and containment, Fire becomes consuming. We’ll draw parallels between the gaits and the elemental behaviour of Fire, tracing how kindling becomes a steady burn, how refinement brings clarity, and how release completes the cycle. In doing so, we gain predictive insight into the energetic rhythm of 2026 and early 2027: when to gather, when to act, when to temper the heat, and when to let what has been created rest and integrate.
Direction and Decision: Where to Aim the Energy
The Fire Horse is brilliant at starting, inventive in approach, but easily scattered by too many paths and ‘what ifs’. In a highly excitable, ideating year, discernment becomes essential, as knowing which ideas deserve pursuit and which are simply sparks passing through can prevent unnecessary volatility. We’ll explore how to choose direction through divining and elemental correspondences, and how to act while the Qi is high without overextending. Techniques include reading the signs of right timing, cooling impulsive fire before acting, and working within shorter, contained cycles of effort. The aim is movement that feels alive yet deliberate, expansion guided by awareness and supported by the steadying rhythm of consistency and structure.
