poetry with Tea

Created during the 5-week thematic residency, Meeting For Teas, held at the Banff Centre for Arts + Creativity, located on the side of Sacred Buffalo Guardian Mountain, this collection of tea poems and illustrations of grey scaled cyanotypes (sunprints) are Daoist in nature, and is both prayer and journey through light, shadow, and verse, giving honour to the painful and healing moments of locating oneself over and over again, with Tea, the departed, and the more-than-human.

The inaugural print run of 50 copies sold out within just 2 months of its release. Now in its second edition, A Tea Stronger Than Death showcases an exceptionally limited print run of only 30 copies.

See below for our Tea List (optional pairings when reading).

The design story

The book's illustrations consist of cyanotypes, also known as sunprints—a category of camera-less photographs created by prolonged exposure to sunlight. Within this compilation, these grey-scaled images vividly portray the subtleties of Tea leaves (leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant), specifically Tea signatures and varietals that are part of my cultural heritage and family story. The images encapsulate the essence of moments spent savouring with Tea as a more-than-human being, while channeling verses that delve into the themes of grief and healing. The resulting sunprints and poetry resonate with an animist spiritual connection during those contemplative and collaborative moments with the Tea plant, her spirit, the Land, and the spirits of my grandparents.

In selecting typefaces for this book, I deliberately opted for fonts with origins outside the realms of British and French influence, considering their historical roles in the Opium Wars. Notably, the Maiola font, designed by Veronika Burian, stands out—a deliberate nod to the contribution of a woman type designer in shaping the visual identity of this work.
