Being Seen Isn't the Same as Being Known

animism and divination

How does animism relate to divination?

Animism holds the world as a web of ongoing relation. Life shows itself in the exchange running between organs, between humans, between flora and fauna, between elements, each layer answerable to the others. Severance is the loss of that answerability, the felt sense of obligation to what surrounds you and vice versa.

Any spiritual, occult, social justice, educational, or healing practice built after severance ends up an imitation of itself, performing the vocabulary and the aesthetic, while underneath the relation is absent.

What Is Animism?

Animism is a worldview that holds all life as related and mutually answerable, humans, plants, animals, elements, organs, each one accountable to the rest. Severance breaks this, the colonial habit of treating the body as private property and land as backdrop rather than kin. Re-animation restores the accountability and the ability to trust again.

How Do We Re-Animate?

Since the body in a post colonial view is understood as private property and no longer an organ among other organs, since Land is held as backdrop instead of direct kin, confronting that split is the only route back, because colonial epistemology installed it in the first place.

But colonialism can't undo itself through changing thoughts or opinions alone. A person can hold every correct idea about interconnection and still practise from inside the split, filing the ideas away as information rather than living them.

Severance is a loss of felt obligation to something outside the individual self, re-animation understands spirit as relational rather than personal, and treats community as the intersection where accountability, and by extension repair and healing, gets to happen.

Being Seen Isn't Being Known

What often gets called being "seen" is really a request for a curated kind of seeing, the kind that rewards comfort and confirms whatever version of the story is on offer. Someone shares a chapter of their life to draw admiration or concern, and calls the response "connection."

Validation asks an audience to agree with the version presented. Being known asks a person to allow contradiction, correction, the discomfort of being met by someone willing to do the labour of naming the parts of the image that don't hold up under a longer look.

Which means if the only accountability runs toward the self, if your astrology or meditation or whatever private process you keep entirely to yourself stays entirely to yourself, it repeats the exact severance it's meant to repair.

Severance gets undone by being seen, held, and returned to by other people who agreed to keep tracking it with you, and by you showing up for them. Yes, you showing up for them.

What Divination Reveals

Divination works from the same premise as animism, that the world holds information which reaches you once you build the right instrument to receive it. Tarot, dowsing, tea leaves, palm reading, the I Ching, interpreting dreams, each divination reads a different channel of the same animate aliveness.

The meaning of divination has less to do with predicting an outcome and more to do with locating where you stand inside a relationship, to a decision, a person, a season. Different divinations rely on different tools, a pendulum swinging over a map for dowsing, a coin toss for the I Ching, but the divination meaning holds steady across all of them. Information exists in relation, and a diviner's job is to stay in right relation long enough to receive it clearly.

What Is the I Ching?

The I Ching, sometimes written I Jing to sit closer to the Mandarin pronunciation, is a divination text built from sixty-four hexagrams, each one a six-line reading of a moment in time. An I Ching reading doesn't hand over a final verdict. Rather, from my experience, it offers a map of where you are, relative to the map of other possibilities, for what's already in motion, then leaves the decision(s) up to you where you intend to go.

I Ching meaning shifts with context. The same hexagram lands differently depending on the question, the timing, the person asking, which is part of why a text this old still gets consulted daily by people looking for orientation rather than prediction.

Finding I Ching Clarity: Learn the I Ching Online

Finding I Ching Clarity runs as a live series with recordings, so anyone learning the I Ching online can join in real time or catch up after. Beyond divination method, the sessions integrate animacy, the practice of seeing and being seen, and reciprocity, the practice of returning what you receive.

If the gap between being seen and being known is one you recognize, this is where we work on closing it, together, tracked and returned to rather than performed alone.
