CAN SIGILS BE LUCKY?

We are in the midst of the Lunar New Year season, welcoming the Year of the Dragon, where many cultures in East Asia use sigils as a spell for good luck and health. I share why sigils can be lucky, as well as what folks who come from cultures outside of Asia can practice sigil work and celebrate the soon to arrive Wood Dragon with respect.

WHAT ARE SIGILS?

Traditionally speaking, sigils are a form of magick that holds the energy that is accessed through a specific intent and ritual. Sigils are often created by combining letters, symbols, shapes into an abstract design that is charged with energy of the desire. Common purposes include protection, peace in a home, recovery and healing, success on a project, and so forth.

Hello! My name is Mimi Young, and I’m a Taiwanese Canadian animist spirit medium, occultist, and the founder of Ceremonie, servicing Los Angeles to New York and Vancouver to Toronto, teaching occult studies, as well as providing dream interpretations and spirit guidance services. I collaborate with brands such as goop and the Salem Witch Festival, and am also a poet, SEO copywriter and business strategist, and stylist. Based in Vancouver on the ancestral traditional lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and Sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, Ceremonie gratefully serves a global community, while remaining rooted in animist, decolonizing perspectives and intersectionality.
