How Can a Clear Witchcraft Definition and a Deeper Witchcraft Meaning Lead to Better Results?
How witchcraft works when a more embodied and inclusive definition of witchcraft and spirit work is embraced.
Wikipedia defines the term ‘witchcraft’ as “the use of magic or supernatural powers to inflict harm or misfortune on others.” In other words, Wikipedia defines ‘witchcraft’ as negative motive and a misuse of energy.
I’d like to offer a different, and more embodied definition of witchcraft… While witchcraft does involve motive and intention (which does not deem it negative nor positive), it seems modern witchcraft, much like everything else within capitalism, has somehow become a fixation about the “stuff”.
Witchcraft and spirit work are not just wands, herbs, ancestor altars, moonlight, and psychic sensing (though it does include these). They’re not limited to the confines of altars, spell surfaces, mirrors, and cauldrons. Witchcraft and spirit work can, and I will argue, should, be approached with anything and anywhere.
Witchcraft and spirit work are ways to engage with the Seen and Unseen, where responsibility, respect, consent, and agency are approached with both intent and impact in mind. They’re about observing truths that simply are, and resisting falsehoods that have been forced into so called “truths”.
Witchcraft and spirit work, in many ways, are about responsibility and self accountability, a refusal to buy into spiritual bullshit.
To be a witch is to give attention to what matters, to hold value and to love.
In this way, to be a spirit worker is to be fully human and alive.
Take away my wands, my herbs, my menses, my altars, my jars (and god, do I have a lot of them!) and what is left? Me. A witch.
Witchcraft and spirit work is about being intimate with what's real.
My witchcraft is my toothbrush, my words, my sleep, my laptop, and none of them at the same time.
Join me, as witches, as spirit workers,
as humans who are fully alive…
