Ageism is a form of censorship, social exclusion, and violence. Judging age spots, wrinkles, sagging, physical softening against a woman are all forms of violence and is anti-feminist at its core. Even if we know this intellectually, we all still have internalized biases against aging and against the Crone as an archetype. (Simply begin to list the various stereotypes that “an old lady” carries!). In fact, when individual women choose to not play into the cyclical fear of anti-aging (a form of capitalism), and her appearance naturally no longer fits into the “youthful beauty” paradigm, we often respond by unconsciously marginalizing and infantilizing her, rendering her irrelevant and invisible.
To bring this to the realm of esoteric practises, the Divine Feminine, also known as the Triple Goddess, is a braid of three sacred archetypes – Maiden, Mother, and Crone. In Lunar Mysteries, she is known as the Full (Mother), Crescent (Maiden), and Dark / New Moon (the Crone). In Menstrual Mysteries, menstruation is equated with the New Moon. Without menstruation, ovulation would be without meaning, and without which conception would not be possible.
