Working shamanically with clients who are seeking balance in their skin and in their heart-of-hearts, the most common request I get is a recommended reading list. I am reluctant to share a top 5 or 10 – it seems too definitive, elitist even – but having reflected on my own path and which written pieces have served as a beacon while disoriented, searching, or simply wanting to expand my personal portfolio of reference material. There is no greater truth than our own personal truths discovered through experience; nothing should ever replace that, but certain published work can be as instrumental as a thick coat on a long, trek through gusty, snowy terrain, as nurturing as an understanding shoulder when we are heartbroken, or as satisfying as a second helping of a favourite dessert. Books and other resources are external confirmations, letting us know that we are part of a collective, that the most personal within is also the most universal.
The recommended readings below are not in any way comprehensive or complete. They simply are a lovely list of helpful books. I also added, in a rather limited fashion, a summary to each title.
How to Become An Adult by David Richo …because (functional) adulting can be hard.
Journey of Souls by Michael Newton …because we all wonder what happens after we die.
Power Vs Force by David R Hawkins and Teddy Carney …because there is a distinct difference between power and force, and how vibration affects everything.
Banished Knowledge: Facing Childhood Injuries by Alice Miller …because we all have something to grieve and release.
Plant Spirit Medicine by Eliot Cowan …because plant spirits are real!
The Field and The Intention Experiment by Lynne McTaggart …because intentions are more powerful than you realize.
Healing Wise by Susun Weed …because the future is female and because common, local herbs are our allies.
The Anatomy of the Spirit by Carolyn Myss … because the spirit and the physical body are one.
The Archival Revival by Terence McKenna …because… just because!
Best Tarot Practises by Marcia Masino …because Tarot is a useful tool for exploration and self-discovery.
The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown …because we all need to learn how to share and be vulnerable.
Animal Speak by Ted Andrews …because animal medicine is a real thing.
Please also check your local bookstore for these reads. We recommend Abe Books in the US and Banyen Books in Canada.
